I Believe...
I believe in the little patch of blue sky.
Like most 5 year olds, my favorite part of life was a park swing set. My brother and I used to create the most elaborate games and act out the most ridiculous scenes; on the swing set we were runaways, Disney characters, even Olympic champions. We dragged my mother all over the parks, insisting on being pushed higher and higher on the swings and making her watch our daredevil stunts on the monkey bars. One fall day in the back of my mother’s Kreisler mini van, I spotted a new swing set in one of the parks near our house. Naturally, I tried to convince her to stop the car so that I could play. It was a cold, cloudy day and my mother had no intention of letting me out of the car, but she still let me try to reason with her. “Ellie,” she finally exclaimed, “the sky is full of clouds! It’s going to rain soon. I’ll let you play on a prettier day.” I distinctly remember searching the sky before answering determinedly, “No mommy, I see a little spot of blue.”
I do believe that I have looked for that patch of blue in my life ever since.
Now, as a college student, I can see how important it is to be able to look at life with childish optimism. I know now that my ability to see the good side of life has given me the courage to pursue music, despite the inevitable pitfalls and hardships that are sure to come in the future. However, I have observed that experience has already begun to rob me of some of that childish optimistic bravado. My optimism has led me into trouble; I have a tendency to take on too many projects and I fall very hard when I do not succeed. Yet, my goal in life is to hold on to this optimistic energy for as long as possible because I believe it ultimately leads to success and happiness.
If I could do anything for the people in this world, I would teach everyone how to think optimistically. I would prove that with positive energy, it is possible to turn the most terrible situation into something good. I believe in the power of positive thinking and I believe that everyone has the ability to find the little patch of blue.
